Our Mission
The mission of InCommunity Lab is to understand and address gender-based violence (GBV) and associated health and mental health disparities, within the U.S. and globally, in partnership with communities and community-based organizations. Central to InCommunity is being and sitting in community, and honoring and amplifying the voices and experiences of the community.

Drawing on the syndemics framework, and grounded in intersectionality and socio-ecological theories,
the primary goals of the lab are to:
• Advance our knowledge and understanding of the prevalence and types of GBV, especially among socially and economically marginalized populations |
• Examine the relationship between GBV and frequently co-occurring health and mental health risks such as HIV, substance use, and depression/suicidality |
• Co-develop and test trauma-informed and multi-level interventions that center and empower the victim/survivor |
• Engage in capacity building efforts that support students, practitioners, and organizations to identify and address gender-based violence and related risks, and to eliminate disparities associated with access to care and stigma |
Our Community
InCommunity Lab is located within the Arizona State University Office of Gender-Based Violence and housed at the School of Social Work, and is made up of a team of interdisciplinary faculty, research and data scientists, postdoctoral scholars, students, and interns, all dedicated to scholar-activism. We work in partnership with a network of community-based partners, ranging from small harm reduction- and community health and mental health organizations to large service organizations, as well as health/hospital clinics and providers. Together, through being in community and the co-development and implementation of projects, InCommunity Lab seeks to broaden our existing knowledge of GBV and GBV related disparities and address them through multi-level and scalable efforts.
